No-exam life insurance

Which applicants don't need a medical exam, how the faster approval works, and what happens if you do need one.

Most carriers now offer accelerated underwriting—for people within certain age brackets and coverage amounts, they'll decide your case using your answers, prescription records, driving history, and other available data rather than a paramedical exam. Approvals can come through in a single day. Every quote you see will tell you whether that carrier needs an exam, might need one, or doesn't need one for that specific product.

What it changes

No exam doesn't mean no review. The carrier checks your answers against their data, and if a policy is issued based on wrong information, they can challenge it in the first two years. Sometimes their investigation reveals something that prompts them to ask for an exam or blood tests anyway; at that point, you can choose whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Generally, people under about 60 seeking coverage up to what the carrier allows without full underwriting, with no serious health conditions and no tobacco use for a year or longer, qualify. If you've had a recent medical appointment with blood work, a few carriers will use those results instead of requiring an exam.

If one is necessary, it's generally a 20- to 30-minute visit at your house or office with a medical technician, at no expense to you. Healthy applicants often see their rate class improve after an exam, so it can actually help you.
